Real Grilling is New again
One of my favorite cookbooks is Weber's Real Grilling. I affectionally dubbed it "the brown book" to visually separate it from its Weber cousins. The stained pages and dog-eared corners give testimony to just how much use and inspiration it has given me.
For 2013, Weber pays homage to its 2005 relative with their latest cookbook: New Real Grilling. Expertly pinned by Jamie Purviance, my new brown book has something which first hooked me on Real Grilling: photographs for every recipe.
I love to enjoy a morning cup of coffee and thumb through a cookbook. Whether I'm planning a meal, or simply feeding my curiosity, photographs are the visual stimuli I need to churn the pangs of hunger, even if I just ate.
Real Grilling started the recipe photograph trend. New Real Grilling not only continues it, but has photographs of numerous tips, skills, and how-tos. It's a great cookbook and a great reference manual.
Now as much as I love the presentation, it is the recipes that matter. I've already bookmarked a few: Horseradish Crusted Strip Steaks, Slow Cooked Peruvian Pork Shoulder and for breakfast last week: Huevos Rancheros with Chorizo.
The only thing better than breakfast is a grilled breakfast.
Although the entire meal takes about an hour to prepare, the results are well worth it.
Roast a poblano pepper on the grill.
Once blistered and allowed to steam and rest, remove the charred skin.
Brown some chorizo.
Add in the poblano, scallions, garlic, and cumin.
Add in a large can of plum tomatoes, and beans, and allow the mixture to cook down.
After the liquid from the tomatoes has been reduced, sprinkle on some cheese. Make four pockets and crack in the eggs.
With the grill lid down, allow the eggs to set. Remove from the grill and serve.
It was so good, Bean and I finished the entire skillet ourselves. Needless to say, lunch was later than usual.
My only quibble with the old "brown book" was the binding. It was horrible and currently looks more "folder" than "book", as most of the pages have fallen out.
I've just scratched the surface of my new "brown book" and the binding looks to be hundreds of times better. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned griller, I can't recommend it enough. New Real Grilling is available on Amazon starting tomorrow, or if you happen to be in a Lowe's, right now.
A side note, not only did Bean help me eat breakfast, this soon to be 15 year old helped me photograph our morning adventure too. His help behind the camera certainly beats a tripod and remote trigger and his help in front of the camera is freeing. I think I may be rubbing off on him, for which I've already apologized.
