Live: Memorial Day Grilling

On Friday morning, I loaded up the Weber Summit Charcoal Grill and Q to grill with my friends on the Fox 45 Morning Show here in Dayton.

I've done several of these through the years and they never fail to disappoint. The fact they already have a Weber Genesis on the patio makes the traveling grill experience that much better when I visit.

Scheduled to go on at 8:15, I arrived an hour early to get everything setup. While it's Memorial Day weekend here in the states, I opted for an unconventional route choosing to smoke a breakfast fatty and grill a planked salmon with a brown sugar, dijon, horseradish glaze.

I've been fortunate enough through my career to be comfortable in front of a television camera. I'd say relaxed, but the minute I say relax is the minute I say something stupid. Something, I might add, I am incredibly prone to do.

With that said, live television is a little different, but with the advent of Facebook & Instagram Live, perhaps not so much anymore. Regardless, there is always the moment where I think to myself, "OK, Mike, today is not the day to screw this up..or hurt someone, but mostly not screw up."

Erik Elkin is a great guy and we made it through the spot effortlessly. The best part, easily, was pulling off the fatty I had re-heated after smoking it the night before. The prep fatty, I rolled on set, I smoked this morning for brunch. Make not, waste not!

With this weekend serving as a reminder for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country, it is also the official start to summer. As grills are fired up in backyards everywhere, I'm hoping some viewers decide to forgo the usual and try something different on the grates. Of course, as the tail end of the video showed, I'm grilling burgers, so who am I to challenge anyone!?

If you grilled it and you like it, then you, my friend, are the grillmaster.

My thanks to Erik, Fox 45, and everyone who tuned in. Happy Memorial Day!
